About the Department
Department of Sociology started in the year 1975 at the undergraduate level. The department organizes seminars, workshops, talks, Movie screenings and field visits on issues that are not only socially relevant but also of interest to the student community at large. Students are also encouraged to join and participate in all the departmental and co-curricular activities. Lectures of eminent personnel are arranged in HINDI and ENGLISH languages such that students of all mediums can benefit from the same.
The Department offers Sociology as a Discipline Component to B.A. Hindi Medium students of I, II, and III year and as an Ancillary Component A.C. Subject to B.A. Hindi Medium students of 1st and 2nd year.
About the Subject
Sociology is the scientific study of human society. The Department of Sociology provides its students with the fundamental knowledge of society, orients them to debate and conceptualize social issues and concerns, and also find practical solutions for the same.
The Department of Sociology is committed to teaching its students at the undergraduate level the foundation of sociology within the context of social awareness of diverse national and international social realities and issues, while building a foundation of intellectual skills for independent research useful for varied professions ranging from academic research and teaching to media, to administration, to public leadership, to management, and so on while also including extra-curricular learning.

The students of the Department have displayed excellent academic records in previous years. Almost every year students scored a good percentage and we have accomplished 100% results. Apart from academics, students also excelled in extra-curricular activities by winning many prizes in various college and intercollegiate academic, cultural, and sports activities.

- Honmore Renuka H. secured first position in SNDT University D.C.Sociology in 2017-18. She received the “MajheRamayan Sociology Prize” in the convocation function at SNDT University, Mumbai.
- Anshu Yadav was awarded the Late Smt. Shyamal K. Sangwikar Gold Medal Prize for the highest marks at the university in Bachelor of Arts with specialization in Sociology for 2019-20.
- Ms. Bharati Kudare A.G. was awarded the Late Smt. Shyamal K. Sangwikar Gold Medal Prize for the highest marks at the university in Bachelor of Arts with specialization in Sociology 2021-22 at the 72nd Annual Convocation of the SNDT Women’s University, Mumbai held on 15th February 2023.
Achievements of Students in co- Curricular activities
The Department of Sociology always encourages students to participate in co-curricular and extracurricular activities of the college and intercollegiate events and competitions. Some important achievements of the students are as follows.
- Shivani Jain of T.Y.B.A. won 2nd prize in the Elocution competition in Grand finale of S.N.D.T. Regional Yuva Mahotsav organised by S.N.D.T. Women’s University Mumbai held from 27 - 29th September 2018.
- Three students of S.Y.B.A. participated in an intercollegiate paper presentation competition at the Department of Sociology, Shri M.D. Shah Mahila College of Arts and Commerce, Malad Mumbai. Priya Diwakar 1st, Gulab Kanwar 2nd and Anshu Yadav won 3rd prize in the competition held on 18th January 2019.
- Shivani Jain of T.Y.B.A. won 2nd prize in an intercollegiate debate competition organised by Hindustani Prachar Sabha, Mumbai. The debate’s topic was “Aaj ke samay main Gandhi ki Prasangikta” held on 30th January 2019.
- Shivani Jain of T.Y.B.A. won first prize in the Intercollegiate debate competition at Shri M.D. Shah Mahila College of Arts and Commerce, Malad Mumbai held on 18th February 2019.
- Anshu Yadav of T.Y.B.A. won second prize in the intercollegiate paper presentation competition at Shri M. D. Shah Mahila College of Arts and Commerce, Malad, Mumbai on 19th December 2019.
- Diwakar Priya won second prize in the intercollegiate Elocution competition at L. J. N. J. College, Vile Parle Mumbai on 21st December 2019.
- Three Students of SYBA (Nidhi Tiwari, Vandana Sahni, and Apeksha Rohele) successfully completed a short-term training programme on “Geriatric Counselling Training Program” in the month of March 2023. The programme was organised by Regional Resource and Training Centre (RRTC) Mumbai under the Centre for the Study of Social Change (CSSC), Bandra, Mumbai in collaboration with Smt. Maniben M. P. Shah Women’s College of Arts & Commerce, Mumbai, Department of Sociology.
- Nidhi Tiwari of SYBA Sociology attended the residential “Leadership camp” organised by NSS Cell, SNDT Women’s University, Mumbai at ShantiVan, Panvel from 2nd- 4th August 2022.
- Antima Chaurasia of SYBA and Diksha Mali of FYBA participated in “Street Play” in the SNDT Youth Festival 2022-23 on 22nd September 2022 at SNDT Women’s University, Churchgate campus. The Street Play was awarded the Second Prize.
- Nidhi Tiwari of SYBA participated in “One Act Play” at SNDT RegionaalYouth Festival 2022-23 on 23rd September 2022 at SNDT Women’s University, Churchgate campus. The One Act Play was awarded to Consolation Prize.
- Anjali Kanoojiya of TYBA won 3rd prize in the “No fire cooking” competition in the intercollegiate fest “Toofan” on 16th February 2023 organised by Sitaram Deora Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai.
